On collection, the vehicle was filthy on the outside, making it virtually impossible to accurately assess its condition. When I raised this, the Avis representative simply said it was fine. The windscreen washer fluid was completely empty, and the car had various scratches and dents that had clearly not been repaired. To be fair, the interior was clean and in good condition. However, on return I was charged almost €200 for a very minor surface blemish on one of the front wheels that was barely noticeable. Given the vehicle's condition when collected, and the difficulty of inspecting a dirty car properly, I cannot prove whether the mark was already present. Overall, I found the service extremely disappointing. The vehicle preparation was poor, the damage process felt unfair, and the charge was disproportionate to the alleged damage. Based on this experience, would I use Avis again - absolutely not.
Absolutely ripped off by Avis. Returned the car 90 minutes early at Marseille Airport and was charged 300 euros extra. Then when talking to the manager, Ben he was enjoying telling me that this was my fault. That because I returned my car an hour early it was my fault. Well that was the last time I hire an Avis car as an Avis Preferred Customer. Really disappointing. Have had great experiences previously with Avis around the world. But that is the end of that relationship. They think that they are clever getting extra money out of me now and will lose 20x that in the future when I go to a competitor. Silly
It’s been a few years since I last rented from Avis in the UK so I’m delighted to share my really pleasant experience with an Avis car from Marseille Airport for most of last week. We picked up the Ford Kuga Hybrid just past midnight arriving from Bristol and had to drive nearly an hour to an air bnb outside Avignon. The car and Apple Car Play directions were great to use and the SUV was quiet, smooth and fast for the motorway and B roads of the Provence countryside - well done, Ford, a fine drive which was also great on petrol!
Quick check in and check out. Car virtually new and no issues. Wasn’t advised that the small ticket I was given along with some other papers was needed for exit from car park (had a bar code on it) but fortunately I hadn’t discarded it. I assumed gate would have number plate recognition. Others had same issue. However, very minor and overall experience was very good.
Except fot the waiting time for my booking everything was excellent. Our flight arrived earlier so we were in the rental office an hour before our reserved time. We had to wait there untill it was our exact time even the counters were not busy. Other than that, the service, staff and a car were excellent.
This is not particular to Avis Marseille but to Avis generally. Avis is usually my preferred rental company and I am part of their loyalty programme and paid for a years extra discount. Recently (April 2026) Avis were offering a 20% Spring Discount. Surprisingly, without logging in for loyalty benefits I was offered exactly the same car for £20 less than was quoted as a member. So much for loyalty and the extra £100 I spent!! Re Avis Marseille, I have dealt with them on dozens of occassions and have not had any difficulties and have found the staff there very helpful and efficient. As a loyalty member never waited long to get on the go. Excellent service from them. Pity members of there loyalty programme are penalised when it comes to general discout offers. As a member quoted £554.20 (with 20% Spring discount) whereas as a non member got exactly same rental for £525.41 with the same discount!! Defies logic. Avis Marseille I would rate 5 *.
The rental company had charged me EUR350 for a small scratch that was already on the car bumper when I picked up the car. I had informed the lady at the desk that there was a scratch and she told me to take a picture and raise it when i returned the car. When I subsequently returned the car, I told the person checking the car however he noted that he was unable to close the rental agreement as they were short staffed but that the scratch would be taken in to account and I wouldnt be charged for it. They charged me and I had to spend 45 mins on the phone to Avis disputing the charge and they hadn't even sent me the damages report to get a refund
Be very careful and take a lot of photos and videos of the car at the start of the rental. Seems a common complaint. No joint inspection at the start and no documents stating what the damage was on the car at the start. No joint inspection at the end. Returned the car yesterday and within 2 hours got a photo claiming we had damaged the car and demanding nearly 350 euros for a small scratch that was already on the car when collected. Luckily we have photos showing the damage was there at the start but it is going to be a fight. Update: contacted via direct message and Avis said the charges were justified even though I had photos showing the damage on the car at pick up. After having to email further dated photos, they are going to refund me. No apology. Ensure you take photos at collection as Avis will say it is your fault. I will avoid Avis next year.
